ABOUT THIS PIECE Edgar Degas' Dancers in Ukrainian Dress was created in 1899 and is in Metropolitan Museum of Art New York. The size of the work is 62,9 x 64,8 cm and is made of charcoal and pastel, on tracing paper, mounted on cardboard. This large pastel on tracing paper is one in a series of studies of dancers in traditional Ukrainian folk dress undertaken by Degas in 1899. The costumes, drawn in multiple touches of high-keyed color, are reminiscent of those worn by performers at Ukrainian weddings at the turn of the twentieth century. Like a master choreographer, Degas deftly orchestrates the rhythms and movements of these spirited dancers, testing their imagery in pastel, charcoal or a combination of both throughout the series. The Artist: Edgar Degas (1834 - 1917) was a French artist famous for his pastel drawings and oil paintings of ballerinas. Degas also produced bronze sculptures, prints, and drawings. Degas is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. Although Degas is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism.
