ABOUT THIS PIECE Edgar Degas' Three Dancers Preparing for Class was created in 1878 and is in Metropolitan Museum of Art New York. The size of the work is 54,6 x 52,1 cm and is made of pastel on paper. The seated dancer in this pastel was derived from a study dated December 1878 of the fifteen-year-old Melina Darde. That drawing and those which explored the poses of the two dancers in the foreground belonged to a stock of figure drawings that Degas used for his larger compositions. The Artist: Edgar Degas (1834 - 1917) was a French artist famous for his pastel drawings and oil paintings of ballerinas. Degas also produced bronze sculptures, prints, and drawings. Degas is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. Although Degas is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism.
