ABOUT THIS PIECE Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps' Interior of a Turkish Cafe was created in 1833 and the painting is in Phillips Collection. The original size of the work is 32,3 x 40,6 cm and is made of oil on canvas. Interior of a Turkish Café was painted after his return to France. A genre scene, it shows a group of standing and seated figures in robes and turbans, assembled before a recess and bathed in liquid semidarkness. The composition is unified by Decamps’s heavily worked technique, a characteristic of his style that distinguished it from the polished surfaces of contemporaneous Salon painting. The Artist: Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps (1803 – 1860) travelled in the East, and reproduced Oriental life and scenery with a bold fidelity to nature that puzzled conventional critics.
