ABOUT THIS PIECE Arthur Dove's Reaching Waves was created in 1929 and is in Metropolitan Museum of Art New York. The size of the work is 51,1 x 61 cm and is made of oil and aluminium on canvas. A seasoned boatman and keen observer of nature, Dove undoubtedly watched the chilly winter tides ebb and flow on the Long Island Sound. He distilled those observations in this nearly monochromatic abstraction, in which irregular waves, some tipped with flecks of white suggestive of foam, rush toward an implied shoreline across a background of vertical bars that evoke the ridges of the ocean floor. By harnessing the emotional power of color and line, Dove expressed his subjective response to nature. The Artist: Arthur Dove (1880 – 1946) was an American artist. An early American modernist, he is often considered the first American abstract painter. Dove used a wide range of media, sometimes in unconventional combinations, to produce his abstractions and his abstract landscapes.
