ABOUT THIS PIECE Edward Mitchell Bannister's Sunset Scene was created in 1875 - 1885 and is in Smithsonian American Art Museum Washington D.C. The size of the work is 27,2 x 48 cm and is made of oil on wood. Here, the glowing oranges and yellows immediately draw us into the center of the image, highlighting the indistinct trees and buildings in the background. Bannister's intimate views of the American landscape contrast with the large vistas of mountains and canyons painted by many of his contemporaries. This picturesque scene, in which nature is shown as passive and calm, is typical of Bannister's work. The Artist: Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828 - 1901) was a Canadian–American oil painter of the American Barbizon school. Born in Canada, he spent his adult life in New England in the United States. There, along with his wife Christiana Carteaux, he was a prominent member of African-American cultural and political communities, such as the Boston abolition movement.
