ABOUT THIS PIECE Eugene Delacroix's Basket of Flowers was created in 1848 - 1849 and is in Metropolitan Museum of Art New York. The size of the work is 107,3 x 142,2 cm and is made of oil on canvas. Given the social and political unrest in post-revolutionary Paris, Delacroix retreated to his country house at Champrosay in September 1848. There he undertook a series of flower paintings intended for the Salon of 1849, which he hoped would capture the variety and profusion of garden flowers. Because of the possibility of frost, he worked quickly, producing five canvases. The Artist: Eugene Delacroix (1798 - 1863) was a French Romantic artist regarded from the outset of his career as the leader of the French Romantic school. As a painter and muralist, Delacroix's use of expressive brushstrokes and his study of the optical effects of colour profoundly shaped the work of the Impressionists, while his passion for the exotic inspired the artists of the Symbolist movement.
